Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) is a decision-making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavioral outcomes for all students.
It is a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) developed to promote positive, safe, and supportive school climates for ALL students by clearly identifying positive behavioral expectations and explicitly teaching the desired behaviors to students. PBIS is NOT a curriculum, intervention, or practice. It is a three-tiered model that focuses heavily on school-wide core features (Tier I).
Tier I- behavior supports for all students
School wide expectations taught to all students
Incentives for students exhibiting expectations
Data-informed decision-making on school systems
Tier II- behavior supports for small group of students
Data-driven decision-making for student interventions
Tier III- behavior supports for individual student plans
Data-driven, Intensive, individualized interventions for students
The California PBIS Coalition (CPC) believes it is important to reflect on and share the positive experiences districts, schools, and educators have delivered to students and communities during these challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic. To honor the positive impacts schools are playing in the lives of California’s students, families, and communities, the CPC would like to recognize all schools that are providing services and supports during these challenging times. The CPC has developed a one-year-only “California PBIS Community Cares” acknowledgement to honor schools and community partners in this important work.
