california's Expanded Learning Opportunities Program

california's Expanded Learning Opportunities Program

The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) provides funding for afterschool and summer school enrichment programs for transitional kindergarten through sixth grade.

“Expanded learning” means before school, after school, summer, or intersession learning programs that focus on developing the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs and interests of pupils through hands-on, engaging learning experiences. It is the intent of the Legislature that expanded learning programs are pupil-centered, results driven, include community partners, and complement, but do not replicate, learning activities in the regular schoolday and school year.

Our programs provide an opportunity to merge school reform strategies with community resources. The goal is to support local efforts to improve assistance to students and broaden the base of support for education in a safe, constructive environment. The Expanded Learning Programs serve eligible students in kindergarten and grades one through nine, inclusive, at participating public and charter schools. (EC § 8482.3(a).)

About Community Partners

Our Expanded Learning programs involve collaboration among parents, youth, representatives from schools and governmental agencies, such as local law enforcement and local parks and recreation departments, and individuals from community-based organizations and the private sector. Programs are created through partnerships between schools and local community resources to provide literacy, academic enrichment, and safe, constructive alternatives for students in grades K-8.

Intent to apply: 21st CCLC & Assests

Intent to apply: 21st CCLC & Assests

The Expanded Learning Division (EXLD) of the California Department of Education (CDE) has released the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Program and After School Safety and Enrichment Teen (ASSETs) Program Request for Applications (RFAs) for funding beginning in the 2022-2023 fiscal year. The 21st CCLC funding is for elementary or middle school programs that support the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non- school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools and their families.

ASSETs funding is for high school programs that create incentives for establishing locally driven after school enrichment programs where partner schools and communities provide academic support and safe, constructive alternatives for high school pupils in the hours after the regular school day, and that supports college and career readiness. The 21st CCLC and ASSETs RFAs can be found on the CDE Funding and Fiscal Management Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/fo/r27/rfa21standassets2023-24.asp

The final date for applications for both 21st CCLC and ASSETs is Wednesday, November  16, 2022. The submission deadline for the hard copy application(s) to the California Department of Education (CDE) and uploading the application narrative(s) into FAAST has changed from 5 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the due date. Applications are due Wednesday, November 16, 2022. Twin Rivers School Unified District intends to apply for both ASSETs and 21st Century Community Learning Center grants to fund Comprehensive After School Programs.
