The H1N1 flu is back in the headlines, and scientists are predicting that infections will rise. Parents understandably have a lot of questions about what's going to happen when their children go back to school this fall. Be sure to read "How We'll Protect Against Swine Flu" by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius featured in Parade Magazine.

H1N1 team met with Custodial Services, Maintenance & Operations and Transportation. Discussion included:

  • Appropriate cleaning response (H1N1 lives on surfaces for 2-8 hours), additional cleaning assistance available for sites that experience an increase in influenza like absences.
  • Providing spray & cleaning cloths to teachers will be researched.
  • Installing hand sanitizer dispensers in classrooms is ongoing and will be expedited.
  • Implications and options for schools when students that become ill at school cannot be picked up right away.

Sacramento County Public Health requested weekly reporting for influenza like illnesses from each school site every Friday. A secure web based system with a survey has been designed to report excused absences, influenza like illness (when available) and school absenteeism rates. If absentee rates exceed 10% at the school sites then reporting must be done daily. The following information needs to be reported on students & staff:

  • Fever >100 degrees
  • Muscle aches
  • Cough
When students or staff become ill with fever & flu symptoms while at school, it is recommended they wear a protective facial mask and be isolated as much as possible to prevent the spread of infection to others while awaiting pickup

The H1N1 team attended county meeting at Sacramento County Office of Education. Information update from Dr. Glennah Trouchet, Sacramento County Health Officer: H1N1 is the prominent flu virus now circulating throughout our community, the state and country. Currently testing is done only on hospitalized patients. If a student or staff person has a fever and other flu like symptoms then it is most likely H1N1, which is now being treated the same as we would treat someone with seasonal flu.

Protective masks have been delivered to all Twin Rivers schools and departments. A person exhibiting a fever >100.4 and upper respiratory symptoms needs to wear a protective mask to reduce the likelihood of spreading germs to others. Person(s) having contact with the contagious person do not need the protective mask. Caregivers should follow good hand washing procedures and limit close contact as much as possible. School sites and departments are reminded to complete their daily census report again this week. Sacramento County Health Department continues to require the reports each day and until notified by their office. School sites should coordinate attendance and school nurse/health assistant resources when compiling data for the report. TRUSD has an additional fax line and effective today; elementary sites shall use 286-8312 and all other sites (middle, high schools. and departments), 286-8243. Sites may also e-mail their reports directly to Vicky.gunter@twinriversusd.

Protective Masks will be delivered on Tuesday, May 5. Please follow the "Protective Mask User Guide" which is included in your package. The mask is to be used on those person(s) who become ill and display flu symptoms while at school. Suspected contagious students will be isolated and masked until they are picked up by a parent or guardian.
