Current Budget Situation - The Tale of Three Budgets
March 2011
While we are not taking the same level of funding cuts we have the past three years, K-12 Public Education has not been spared in the 2011 budget. In short, the Governor's preliminary budget is contingent on the extension of current temporary taxes which would otherwise expire on July 1, 2011. Without these tax extensions, our schools could lose an additional $5 billion in funding or $900/student. As of today, the legislature has not agreed to allow the vote on the tax extensions. A two-thirds vote of the legislature is required to bring the vote to the ballot in June.
This uncertainty is forcing California school districts to brace for the worst case scenario and send out thousands of layoff notices this spring. Each district is in effect preparing three budgets.
In Twin Rivers, it looks like this:
Budget A - Tax Extensions Pass-$8.3 million is added to our budget
Budget B - Tax Extensions Do Not Make it to the Vote or Do Not Pass-Status Quo (Our current budget is based on this scenario)
Budget C - Tax Extensions Do Not Pass and the State Cuts More -An additional $7.5 million is taken from our budget
