Money Matters

The U.S. Mint has a website for teachers and students:  www.usmint.gov/kids/teachers     Using money is a great way to teach math and history.  How about having the kids match the coinage date with what happened in history that year.

Project Citizen

We the People: Project Citizen is a curricular program for middle, secondary, and post-secondary students, youth organizations, and adult groups that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. The program helps participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy. In the process, they develop support for democratic values and principles, tolerance, and feelings of political efficacy http://www.civiced.org/index.php?page=introduction

California Water Shed Project- see attached documents

The Caring for our Watersheds program (CFW) is an environmental writing competition for high school students. Students answer the question, "What can you do to improve your watershed?" Students must research their local watershed, identify an environmental concern, and come up with a realistic solution in a 1,000 word proposal. Ten finalists will present their ideas to win up to $1,000 cash rewards for themselves and their schools. Schools also receive cash for every ten complete proposals submitted.

The Center for Land-Based Learning will be holding a workshop for teachers interested in the CFW program on Friday, December 10, 2010 from 9am-12pm at our headquarters in Winters, CA. Reimbursement for substitutes (half-day) may be available.

Cal Serve Initiative Partnership Grant

As of June 2011 the Federal Government has suspended funding for this grant indefinitely

The CalServe Initiative Partnership Grant provides support for Local Education Agencies (LEA) as they implement service-learining across their school districts and counties.  The LEAs establish school board policy, implement high quality practices, and build institutional capacity for service-learning.  Their common goal is to provide all students with a least one high quality service learining experience in each grade span across the LEA.  Service-learning, as defined by the CNCS, is a teaching strategy which engages students in active learning using higher-order, critical-thinking skills and emphasizes the ethics of citizenship and active, civic participation.
