What is Career Technical Education?

Career Technical Education (CTE) is a program of study that involves several year sequence of courses that intergrate core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge to provide students with a pathway to postsecondary education and career.

ROP:
Sacramento County Office of Education Regional Occupational Program offers year round career technical training to students which will contribute to their academic and career success. There are currently 74 Regional Occupational Centers and Programs througout the state of California, which serve over 500,000 high school and adult students every year.

More than 84% of students who successfully complete an ROP class get hired.  ROP students recieve significant experiences through hands-on training in more than 90 occupational areas.

ROP training provides students with self-satisfaction and a sense of pride as well as entry-level job skills in the competive job market.

Articulation Agreements:

Students may recieve community college credit for completion of selected articulated courses.  The following classes that are articulated with American River College are identified with an asterisk (*).

CTE and ROP Course Descriptions

Foothill High School

*Careers with Children I & II (ROP)
Students learn child development through classroom instruction, while learning the process of observation as well as developing and presenting age appropriated activities to children. Community internships may include placement in preschools, day care centers, infant centers elementary schools, licensed family day care homes , schools and recreational settings. This course articulates with American River College.

*Culinary Arts  (ROP)
This two-semester course prepares student with food production, preparation, customer service, and teamwork skills for employment. This program prepares students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed to successfully enter the job market or transition to post-secondary education programs.

*Computer Graphics (ROP)
In this hands-on course students will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop and create mutli-layerd artwork and logos. Students will promote and market services and products as well as learn how to format and develop a variety of desktop publishing products using Microsoft publisher software.

 Grant High School

*Accounting
This course teaches students the language of the business world. Students learn to apply the internationally recognized Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) while preparing financial statements, payroll records, and tax forms. Specific topics include receivables, inventories, long-term assets, current liabilities, and computerized accounting. Whatever career you're thinking about-musician, athlete, homemaker, CPA, or entrepreneur-or if you're off to college soon, you'll need accounting skills for success in the real world

Computer Applications I
This course is designed to help students acquire fundamental technology skills ranging from personal computer familiarization and keyboarding skills, to basic knowledge of the Internet, along with common business software applications such as word processing, spreadsheet,and presentation software. Passing grades are determined by successfully completing each of six (6) district generated assessments.

*Environmental Horticulture (ROP) Academy Only
Students in this class have a unique opportunity to participate in a student- run business called GEO. Students in GEO learn how to manage the school garden and develop business skills by selling their products - flower bouquets, salsa, and plants - to local stores and at the Farmer's Market. Students learn how to grow plants, make flower bouquets, prepare the soil, water with irrigation systems, create landscape designs, and develop business and marketing skills. Students also learn how to cook food from the garden and teach elementary school children in the neighborhood. Students gain leadership skills learning how to facilitate team meetings, manage the money they earn, and organize community service projects.

*Electronics Technology (ROP)
This course builds on the concepts learned in Electronics.  Students in this course will gain on the job experience by maintaining/ rebuilding a wide range of photocopier and fax machines. Students in this course also work on photocopier machines and the proper way to make-sort, stack, multiple, single and duplex copies. Students will also learn how to clear misfeeds, and install toner and repair small electrical items such as blow dryers, Ps-2s, and Lamps, almost anything electrical. This course provides real world job experience and looks good on a resume.

Introduction to Business
This course is designed to introduce students to the world of business. Students will learn concepts that will prepare them for the world of work and life beyond high school. Areas of study include employability, career preparation, job acquisition and retention, financial management and leadership development. selection and testing for college are emphasized in earnest. Community service is required.

Law I - (ROP) Academy Only
Criminal Justice Academy I, called Law I, is the beginning course in the four year law enforcement protective services series. This course introduces students to the many different kinds of jobs available in the protective services fields. This introductory course will place emphasis on historical influences, fundamental duties, obligations and ethics inherent in a career in any of the law careers. Computer literacy and keyboarding skills will also be taught. Community service is required.

Law II - (ROP) Academy Only
Law II as it is commonly called, is the second in the law enforcement series. This course includes both drivers' education and health/safety components sophomores must complete. Extra time is spent on the vehicle code, driving as related to law enforcement vehicles and DUI. The health and safety section of this class incorporates CPR certification, laws and the consequences of drug use and drinking. Public speaking, mentoring and leadership training are all begun in this year too. Community service is required

Law III - (ROP) Academy Only
Criminal Justice Academy III is an ROP credit course that is the third in sequence of the Grant High School Criminal Justice Magnet Academy. In this year the students start visiting venues like the County Court House, Crime Lab and the Emergency Vehicle Driving Course (EVOC). Guest speakers from law enforcement agencies and colleges are common. This course discusses the court system, juvenile law, search and seizure, evidence collection, vehicle pullover and procedures. Public speaking, mentoring and leadership training continue, while preparation, selection and testing for college are emphasized in earnest. Community service is required.

Retail Sales & Merchandising (ROP)
Earn while you learn. In this course students will learn sales transactions, customer service skills, sales techniques, merchandising, display preparation, advertising, and marketing and loss prevention. Students will also learn life skills that will aid them in gaining and retaining employment. Students will gain on the job experience in this class and a R.O.P. certificate of completion.

Rio Linda High School

*Computer Assited Design and Draft - CADD - (ROP)
CADD is offered to 11th and 12th grade students.  The instructor will follow lessons set forth by American River College (ARC) Visual Information department. Design drawings will be completed on the portfolio of work to be presented to the ARC staff, who will in turn grant them college credit for their first two college classes related to architecture, construction and engineering.

*Computer Graphics - (ROP)
This course is offered to 10th - 12th grade students. This class is designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of computerized graphic art design, illustration and preprint techniques. Students will become knowledgeable in the use of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign software. Students will maintain a portfolio which will be submitted to American River College to receive college creditsin Arts New Media. This class may be taken as a Fine Art credit for high school graduation.

Culinary Arts (ROP)
This two-semester course prepares students with food production, preparation, customer service, and teamwork skills for employment. The Food Service and Hospitality Occupations program effectively prepares students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed to successfully enter the job market or transition to post-secondary education programs at a community college, private, technical or trade school, and/or a four year college or university. Instruction includes topics such as planning, selecting, storing, purchasing, preparing, testing, serving and selling of quality food and food products. Additional study areas include nutritive values, safety and sanitation, use and care of commercial equipment, management of food establishments, cost and profitability analysis, side work and customer orders and handing cash and credit transactions.

*Digital Media - (ROP)
Digital Media provides training for individuals seeking entry-level positions in fields requiring computer graphics skills with an emphasis on multimedia. Students who successfully complete the course will have valuable skills in general illustration, digital imaging, 2D and 3D animation, and digital video editing. Students receive training in software programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Cinema 4D (3D modeling and animation), Dream Weaver, Flash, iMovie and Final Cut Pro. In addition, students are taught web page design skills utilizing raw HTML with JavaScript implementation.

Marketing and Public Relations - (ROP)
This fundamental course in marketing and public relations (PR) delineates the role of marketing and PR to any organization. Topics include identifying internal and external customers, buyer behavior, products, channels of distribution, promotion, pricing and social issues in marketing. Standard business and non-traditional aspects of marketing and PR are explored.

*Multi-Media Sound Engineering - (ROP)
This course is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in Digital Sound Engineering. Students will learn to operate machines to record, synchronize, mix or reproduce music, voices or sound effects in sporting arenas, theater production, recording studios or movie and video productions.

*Radio Productions - (ROP)
Students will train in an actual radio station and will learn and practice skills which can lead to a career in sales, announcing, writing, promotions, or engineering. The students will get the opportunity to train in a radio station setting. They will learn to develop scripts, announcements, create promotional materials, and assist in production of radio program elements.

Retail Sales & Merchandising /Entrepreneurship - (ROP)
In this one semester course the student will learn sales transactions, customer service skills, sales techniques, merchandising, display preparation, advertising, marketing math, loss prevention, and computer training. Computer training may not be available at all locations. Students must provide own transportation to class and work sites.
