Commitment of a Mentor
THE ROLES, EXPECTATIONS, AND COMMITMENT OF A MENTOR
Role and Expectation of Mentors:
A mentor is a job coach, friend, role-model, and motivator. A mentor is consistent, reliable, and patient. A mentor listens well and evaluates what is best for their mentee given the mentee's situation.
1. Time Commitment:
a. One mandatory, pre-scheduled, 45 min meeting per month, email and telephone conversations. As this s a School-based Mentoring Program the face to face contact will need to take place at the school site.

c. screening reference check, DOJ fingerprint & Megan's Law clearance, and passed TB test
d. Photo ID badge
2. Activities:
Two pre-scheduled meeting per month.b. Participate in end of the year mentor/mentee celebration luncheon.
No tobacco use
No vulgar language
No meeting with your mentee outside of school hours without going through the proper permission slips as outlined by the mentor program manager.
No presents (except a small present at graduation)
4. Monitoring the Relationship:
a. Mentors will be expected to check in monthly with the program manager on the status of the mentoring relationship. E-mail journals will be distributed to mentors monthly to "refresh" their memory of this requirement.
5. Ending the Relationship:
a. Mentee and mentors will have a closure session that outlines future rules of contact. The program manager will conduct this evaluation seesion so that the relationship may end smoothly and with a proper and friendly closure.
6. Maintaining Confidentialitly:
a. If a mentee is at all being abused or you thin tht they might be a victim of physical, emotional or ongoing verbal abuse then you need to report this immediatly to the program manager and/or lead teacher. Mentees understand in that everyone is concerned at all times with thier safety. They have been assured that if they disclose that kind of information then a CPS report will be issued.
b. The relationship between you and your mentee is a sacred one as is any friendship, please be discreet when sharing what your mentee shares with you. Respect their privacy.
7. Having Fun!
The mentoring relationship can be akward at first, but the more you keep things light at the beginning of the relationship the more you will bond later. Remember that trust and relaionships take time to build and the more flexible, patient and committed you are the faster that mentee/mentor relationship will grow!
