Physical Education Requirements

Secondary students enrolled in PE will be required to dress in school-approved PE clothes for safety and hygienic reasons on a daily basis. Students will be given an assigned locker for the safekeeping of their belongings during class. Students are advised to not leave any valuables or money unlocked in the gym and/or locker rooms. Teachers are not responsible for any lost or stolen property, or replacement of locks.
 
Students who miss or do not participate in PE for more than three days are required to have a note from their doctor; otherwise, a lower course grade and/or disciplinary consequences will occur. Students who refuse to participate will serve a disciplinary consequence.

PE Courses are offered in Grades 7-10, with PE Elective Courses to those who wish to continue taking PE in their 3rd and 4th year in High School. 

7th Grade Course
In 7th grade, the content standards emphasize meeting challenges and making decisions. Students will also prep for passage of the state physical fitness test (FITNESSGRAM). This course provides students the continuing opportunity to learn through a developmentally appropriate, comprehensive sequentially planned physical education program aligned with the Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools. The focus of this course is the application of movement skills and knowledge to individual and dual physical activities; the assessment and maintenance of physical fitness to improve health and performance, and the requisite knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles and strategies; and the application of psychological and sociological concepts, including self-responsibility, positive social interaction, and group dynamics, in the learning and performance of physical activity. 

8th Grade Course
In 8th grade, the content standards emphasize working as a team to solve problems. This course provides students the continuing opportunity to learn through a developmentally appropriate, comprehensive sequentially planned physical education program aligned with the Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools. The focus of this course is the application of movement skills and knowledge (including defensive and offensive strategies) to team physical activities, gymnastics/tumbling, and square dance; the assessment and maintenance of physical fitness to improve health and performance; the requisite knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles and strategies to improve health and performance; and the application of psychological and sociological concepts, including self-responsibility, positive social interaction, and group dynamics, in the learning and performance of physical activity. 

9th Grade (Course 1)
PE Course I is a required course for all 9th grade students. The curriculum is aligned with the California Standards for Physical Education and provides students an opportunity for an in-depth study in one or more of the following areas: individual and team sports, rhythm and dance, and developing a personal fitness plan. This course provides students the opportunity to improve their health-related physical fitness and meet the standards on FITNESSGRAM, which is the state physical fitness assessment. Students will develop proficiency in their movement skills, expand their capabilities for independent learning, and examine practices that allow sound decision making to enhance successful participation in movement activities. Appropriate social skills and personal responsibility skills will be taught and practiced by working independently and with others.

10th Grade (Course 2)
Course II will provide curriculum that is aligned with the California Standards for Physical Education and provides an opportunity for more complex levels of in-depth study in one or more of the following areas: individual and team sports, rhythm and dance, and developing a personal fitness plan. Students who did not pass 5 out of 6 areas of the state physical fitness test (FITNESSGRAM) in Course I will need to do so in Course II.

PE Electives Vary By Site and include Yoga, Aerobics, Advanced PE, and CardioDance
